It seems that if prescribed a benzo for anxiety valium vs lorazapam if new to it with the lower potency of valium would be a better choice. ?

No: You also need to think of the buildup of metabolic byproducts. Valium has many of these, which can build up. People may have greater chance of over-sedation with valium, especially as time goes by. The chance for cognitive and memory lapses as well as dizziness and potential falls, increases with age also. Valium would not be my choice in someone who is older and already on multiple meds.
