how come ultrasounds done at 6-8 weeks are considered more accurate than 12 weeks?

Dr. Bruce J. Stringer

Less variability: There is very little difference in size between different 6-8 week embryos. Therefore there is less uncertainty of their ages. The further along the pregnancy gets, the greater the manifestations of individual differences. So a fetus that will be 9 lbs at birth will look bigger than one destined to be 6 lbs.
