Many: Complications can run the full spectrum from scarring, bruising, uneven distribution of fat; to many surgical problems such as clots either from blood or fat getting into the bloodstream causing problems with strokes heart disease or lung blockage (pulmonary embolism), complications with anesthesia, reactions to whatever solutions are injected, and there have even been reported deaths.

Liposuction: First, find and interview a surgeon who has expert training and qualifications in liposuction. Seek out those patients who have experienced liposuction by the specialists. Complications can include: those from anesthetic problems--local or general, bleeding, not replacing adequate fluids during and after tthe procedure, improper technique, infection, rarely even death. But, please consult first.

Many....: The severe ones are rare but here are a few: (1) death - usually in the hands of a novice or another doctor not paying attention to detail. (2) infection (3) irregularity - more common especially in larger patients with this being said, liposuction is performed safely every day by qualified and competent doctors.

Few: Liposuction surgery carries risk of infection, bleeding, skin contour irregularities, asymmetry, unsatisfactory skin redraping, unsatisfactory cosmetic result, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and even death. Having said that, liposuction surgery done carefully by well-trained/experienced physicians is a generally safe and well tolerated procedure.

Risks of lipo: Liposuction is real surgery and carries a small risk of complications. Risks of surgery include bleeding and bruising, infection, multiple small scars, fluid collections, asymmetry, contour irregularities, and blood clots. Risks are often dependent on your current medical condition. Please discuss with your board certified plastic surgeon. http://www.dassmd.com/liposuction/index.html.

Are there liposuction complications that happen often?

Not if done properly: Complications from liposuction are very rare if patient and doctor selection are made carefully. For example a patient with loose skin after weight loss is not a very good candidate for lipo whereas someone with good skin elasticity and localized extra fat is. An unskilled surgeon or a poor candidate for the procedure can cause bad results and even complications. Choose wisely!
