Omphalitis: Signs of infection in a recently separated umbilical stump (omphalitis) would be (1) foul odor (2) purulent discharge (3) redness around the skin (4) warmth to the area, greater than surrounding skin (5) bleeding possible (6) infant sick with fever. Its rare, less than 1% and occurs within the first week of life. If in doubt let your pediatrician or family physician check it.
