Pain: Ramsay hunt syndrome is due to a varicella zoster (virus that causes chickenpox) infection of the facial nerve near the inner ear. Most common symptoms are pain in or around ear or side of mouth, painful rash around ear, weakness of face on side of pain, difficulty closing one eye, hearing loss and vertigo.
