what causes sharp pain at the back of the ankle? the pain comes and goes. when i have to pain, it hurts so bad i can't walk on it. there's no swelling

Achilles tendinitis: This could be achilles tendinitis ( an inflammation of the tendon in the back of the ankle that promotes ankle plantar flexion(pushing down against the ground to push off to walk). If inflamed it will hurt with walking and running. Relative rest and the use of tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain and Motrin for decreasing the inflammation. Physical therapy will also aid in pain relief and healing of the tendinitis.
