Periods longer : A lot of things can affect the length of a menstrual period. Stress, diet & exercise, weight changes, travel, and even a new environment with new people can contribute to the length of a menstrual period. If a woman is sexually active, a late menses sometimes indicates pregnancy. Over the counter pregnancy tests are most accurate one week (or more) after a missed or late menses.
