A 33-year-old member asked:
Can they test someone's gender through a urine test?
2 doctor answers • 2 doctors weighed in

Dr. Robert Kwok answered
Pediatrics 33 years experience
Yes: Yes, there are tests on urine to try to determine an unborn baby's gender, but the accuracy is uncertain. The tests may be looking for traces of male dna (y chromosome) in the pregnant woman's urine. That means enough of an unborn boy's dna would have to cross the placenta, enter his mother's bloodstream, and get filtered through her kidneys into her urine ... To cause a "boy baby" test result.

A 37-year-old female asked:
What is the meaning of barbiturates in a random urine test in a patient not taking barbiturates?
1 doctor answer • 1 doctor weighed in

Dr. Peter Duic answered
Emergency Medicine 9 years experience
Possibly NSAIDS: Motrin and other meds in that class, nsaids "can" infrequently result in a false positive. Some patients may be taking meds. Which contain barbiturate but they are not aware of it, such as "fioricet". Random urine drug tests usually include an initial screening test, sensitive to detect substances but sometimes false pos., these must always be sent for confirmation.
