Chronic ankle injury: Given the history of fracture, your ankle probably has some degree of arthritis. Ibuprofen or alleve should help with this. More importantly you probably have a chronic ankle sprain as well. The best treatment for this is physical therapy with balance exercises. After an injury your ankle often loses the sense of its own position (proprioception) and balance retraining will help a lot.

Probable referral: An xray will be able to tell 'the seriousness of the fracture' such as displacement or comminution. Displacement is when the bones are 'shifted' and less likely to heal. Communition is when there are 'extra fragments' . An orthopedic doctor will be called and follow-up arranged depending upon the seriousness.

My 11 year old son cut his shin open on a piece of metal, does not need stitches, we can't remember when his last tetnus shot was, what are symptoms to look for ? Thank you.

Things to consider. : Your son is 11 years of age and he is due to have a tetanus booster at this age. As for the shin cut, hopefully it was cleaned with hydrogen peroxide and treated with an antibiotic ointment. The best thing to do is to schedule an appointment with his pediatrician or family physician to get his shot and check on his cut.
