Croup: Your child most likely has croup, which is caused by a virus. It causes swelling around the vocal cords, resulting in a hoarse voice and barking cough. It is usually worse at night. Give him lots of clear liquids. Take him in the bathroom with the shower running to breathe steamy air. Call your doctor if a fever >101, more trouble breathing, or not tolerating fluids well.
