Kidney damage: Chronic conditon of kidneys which can develop after many years, usually > 15 years, primarily in patients with type 1 diabetes. Problem is sclerosis (shrivelling up) of the tiny blood capillaries in the glomeruli (min filters) of kidney. This leads to progressive loss of function. Patients usually require dialysis or kidney transplantation within 3 years of diagnosis.
