Acne meds: Accutane reduces new acne lesions, and seems to reduce the scars, and the color. Antibiotics reduce new lesions, but not scarring. Topical antibiotics the same. Retina seems to speed the healing of acne lesions, benzoyl peroxide also seems to speed the healing, reduces some new lesions, but not treat the scarring. Some will scar more, others less with similar acne.

You can add lasers and peels to help with scars and active acne if you are not on accutane

If you are going to use Accutane (it does work) make sure to discuss the risks with your doctor as it is quite toxic.

NO: Topical and oral acne medications can reduce the severity of or even eliminate acne breakouts. In so doing they can prevent future scar formation but they do not reverse acne scars that already exist.

Scientific Rx: No home or folk remedies work. A dermatologist can make the scars less apparent with lasers, fillers, abrasions, or tiny surgeries. Decide if this is what you want, or whether like some hollywood men you want to keep some scars. All acne is manageable today; if yours is severe and your face very oily, you may be offered Accutane by a dermatologist. Good luck & stay proactive.

Depends on type: Acne scars come in various types. Some are crater-like, which respond well to mech dermabrasion. Some vertical sides (ice-pick type) are very difficult to eliminate. Stopping the acne process, get great skin care program going, and use of mechanical abrasions (not micro-abrasion) should improve the surface problems and noticeable surface roughness.

No. Accutane will treat acne, but will not do anything for acne scars.

No easy fix: Treatment varies according to the subtype of acne scars and the patient's skin type (pigmentation). Fractionated lasers (e.g. Fraxel) are effective in all but the darkest skin types. Filling agents benefit deperessed scars caused by loss of subcutaneous fat, while a facelift benefits patients with both acne scars and loose, inelastic skin. Vascular lasers can reduce any associated skin redness.

Bleach: These self-cure in a month or two, but you can speed this with a hydroquinone bleach. Don't overdo it or you'll end up with a mess. Best wishes.
