Nasal surgeries?: Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose for cosmetic purposes. May also be done to improve function. Septoplasty reshapes the nasal septum, usually to improve function by reducing obstruction. Certain times, both are done together.

Yes: Both are nose surgeries. Septoplasty straightens the inside, while rhinoplasty improves the outside appearance. They are commonly done together. Sometimes if your nose is bent by a fracture you may need a reconstructive septirhinoplasty to fix the problem.

Some: Septoplasty corrects deviations of the septum-the wall between the left and right nostrils. Rhinoplasty reshapes the outer appearance of the nose. Sometimes, the very top of septum is changed in rhinoplasty, since it contributes to the bridge. However septoplasty is generally done to improve breathing and rhinoplasty is performed to improve nasal appearance.

Yes and no: They are related but not the same. A rhinoplasty alters the structure and appearance of the outside of the nose. A septoplasty reshapes the middle partition of the nose but does not change appearance. A septorhinoplasty does both. Typically a septoplasty is done for problems breathing and is usually covered by insurance. Rhinoplasty usually is not.

different surgery: Septoplasty relates to the cartilage wall between the nostrils and generally is performed to straighten a deviation. Rhinoplasty is a broader term which refers to surgery of the nose for various reasons whether they be functional or cosmetic. Rhinoplasty often includes a septoplasty, but not all septoplaties these require a rhinoplasty.

Nasal surgery: A septoplasty is performed to correct a deviation in the nasal septum and a rhinoplasty is performed to improve the form and function of the nose. Sometimes a septoplasty is performed in the context of rhinoplasty. Be sure to have your nose evaluated by a board certified facial plastic surgeon.

You : You may want to take about a week off work if you have both a rhinoplasty and septoplasty at the same time. It's best to have the rhinoplasty concurrently as it's very common to use the cartilage harvested during a septoplasty to do some of the rhinoplasty work.

A female asked:
How is a septoplasty different from a rhinoplasty? It sounds to me like a septoplasty is very similar to a rhinoplasty. What is the difference?

A : A septoplasty involves surgery to straighten the septum (wall inside the nose that separates the nasal cavity into right and left sides). It doesn't change the outside of the nose, but is done to help with functional breathing problems.
A rhinoplasty involves surgery to change the shape of the outside of the nose. This can be for cosmetic or functional reasons (or both).

A 43-year-old female asked:
Is it commonplace for a rhinoplasty to be done as a necessity during a septoplasty and turbinate reduction?

Dr. David Clayton answered
Plastic Surgery 45 years experience
Yes, it is common: The septum is connected to the nasal bones, and sometimes it is necessary to change the position of the nasal bones in order to change the shape of the deformed septum. This is not always the case, but it is relatively common to see such a circumstance. It is never necessary to change the nasal bones to remove all or part of the turbinates, which are bones that hang in from the sides.
