Sore throat: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician & get a streph throat test. If you have streph throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future compications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.

Try adding 2 tsp of slippery elm bark to 1 cup of hot water (steep for at least 5 minutes in a covered teapot). Drink this as needed to relieve pain or a few times per day. Slippery Elm Bark lozenges are another option.

Typical sore throat pain, i.e. that related to sinus drainage, tonsillitis, etc. may be helped by using OTC Hurricaine, Chloraseptic, etc. Eating ice chips and drinking plenty of fluids can help, as well as gargling with warm salt water. A humidifier blowing toward your face may also help.

Supportive care: If it's due to a viral infection, antibiotics will not help; they are for bacterial infections (like strep). Symptomatic relief can be had by frequently gargling with a mixture of warm salt water, hydrogen peroxide, and mouthwash or simply with warm salt water. Avoid alcohol as it dries throat more. Otc throat lozenges with Benzocaine can numb the discomfort a while. If pain persists, see doctor.
