A 35-year-old member asked:
What is the normal heart rate for moderate to strenuous exercise?

Dr. Thomas Deberardino answered
Orthopedic Surgery 32 years experience
50-75% of max HR: Your maximum heart rate (hr) goes down with age and is generally figured by subtracting your age in years from 220. Your target hr for moderate to strenuous exercise is 50-75% of your maximum hr.

A 39-year-old member asked:
How would monitoring my heart rate during exercise help me?
2 doctor answers • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Vasudev Ananthram answered
Cardiology 32 years experience
Generally not needed: Generally you do not have to monitor your heart rate during exercise and many of the sensors to do so are not accurate particularly when your body is in vigorous motion. You should exercise to comfortably intense levels, for instance you should be able to speak without difficulty during exercise. In certain heart conditions your doctor might advise you to maintain below a certain heart rate.
