Calorie count: Eat a healthy diet, low in carbohydrates and full of fruits, vegetables, fiber and protein. Also, drink plenty of water and stay away of sodas. But, i encourage you to exercise as its benefits go beyond physical. Exercise will help with your mood and general well being.

Cut calories!: But the goal of weight loss is not to lose muscle, which conventional dieting will do: 1 lb of muscle per 3 lb of fat loss. The goal of weight loss is to become leaner: lose fat and little muscle. You cannot accomplish this by dieting. Why are you looking for a way out from exercising to achieve the goal of weight loss!

You can exercise!: Obviously eating correctly and running a mild calorie deficit will work, but mild activity like walking, going up stairs, etc. Constitutes activity. My colleague, dr. Bassett's research claims that if we get 10000 steps per day, we need no more. I have never told a patient that all activity was off limits!

By insuring that: calories burned must > calories consumed. Eat healthfully & be physically active. Aim for 7.5 to 8 hrs of sleep / night. Hydrate w at least 64 oz of water / day. If you are physically able to exercise -would really encourage it.

Cardio Mix: You cannot target specific areas for weight loss - if you have adipose tissue to lose (not everyone does), then consider an increase in cardio & a balanced diet. However, do not always do the same exercise or you will increase your risks for stress injuries. Mix things up with walking, running, biking, swimming, elliptical, or circuit training. Ultimately you need to burn more than you consume.
