Thalassemia: To test whether someone has Thalassemia, a simple blood test is done called a CBC with smear. From this the lab can tell if your red blood cells have characteristics unique to thalassemia. Iron studies can also be done to determine if the person is anemic. Additional testing can be done to determine what kind of Thalassemia is present. Genetic testing can also be done to determine carrier status.
