Try prune juice: If a 2 year-old has been pushing when pooping, or pooping firm poops, a parent can try giving the child 6 ounces of regular prune juice. If the child doesn't like prune juice, one can try giving half/half prune/apple juice. Sometimes apple juice (8 ounces a day) also works. A glycerin suppository can help. If the constipation is ongoing, the doctor can evaluate and offer more ideas.

Fluids and Fiber: Constipation almost always involves one or more of three things in a toddler: either there is not enough water, not enough fiber, or too much of something constipating. If your child is in pain now, a glycerine suppository can give quick relief, but don't make a habit of using them. Better to find the dietary changes necessary to relieve the cause of the problem. Speak to your doctor about it.
