A 55-year-old female asked:

what topical medication is ok prior to allergy test? calahist? calamine? hydrocortisone?

Topical Meds OK: Most allergy tests that I am familiar with are blood tests. Or they are a set of injections into the clean skin area and the skin response is measured. If you have a rash OK to use any of the above meds you mentioned to stop the itching on the rash. Follow directions on the product label. Contact your doctor for more exact diagnosis and treatment support.

A couple reasons: It is sometimes given for musculoskeletal pain such as tietze's syndorme, an inflamation of the cartilage between the rib and sternum seen in women. Can be injected or given by mouth. Indocin (indomethacin) and similar drugs can also be used..Hydrocortisone is also used at times for pericarditis, but the recurrence rate is higher than if Indocin (indomethacin) is used so that is preferred. Also used for dressler's syndrome.

I have been on cortef (hydrocortisone) 3 times a day for a total of 30mg a day. Is this harmful for pregnancy?

Not directly: Cortef (hydrocortisone) is similar to cortical adrenal hormones. The placenta is able to break down maternal cortical adrenal hormones, so that the fetus is not exposed to an excess of them. However Cortef (hydrocortisone) (like any other cortical adrenal hormone) can cause hypertension and diabetes in the mother, and these may negatively affect the pregnancy. As always, one has to balance risks and benefits...

What allergy eye drops can I purchase to relieve itchy eyes due to the high pollen count during the summer?

Antihistamine: While lubricating drops help some, antihistamines drops do the most for eye allergy symptoms, including itching & watering. There are many over-the-counter antihistamine products to choose from. Older products may be combined with decongestants which decrease redness; however, overuse of these products may cause increased rebound redness. Plain antihistamine drops are your best bet for itching.
