Can children become ill after the mmr vaccine because it contains the poison mercury?

No mercury: #1 MMR has never contained mercury in any form including no thimerosal ( which has been used in other vaccines). Mmr has never contained thimerosal since it has been made.
#2 MMR reactions are fairly common. Up to 1 in 6 children has a mild fever, with 5% developing slight rash. Occasionally a child shows some swollen lymph glands in the neck . They may complain of achy joints for a few days too.
