Hormone: The 1st is to outrule pregnancy as early in pregnancy you can have spotting. If that's been out ruled then you might have a possible hormonal fluctuation. These fluctuations could be easily caused by stress or flu or even increased exercise. Best observe into your next cycle and consult your GP if it recurs

You will see blood: If you begin spotting you will see blood on your panties. Depending on what trimester you are in, spotting can mean many different things. Contact your provider for evaluation if spotting occurs.

A 34-year-old member asked:

Should I be concerned about frequent spotting during the month?

Yes, somewhat: Most healthy, normal women don't have spotting during the month. They bleed during their periods, and don't bleed in between periods. Frequent spotting should be evaluated by an ob-gyn doctor. It may be due to menstrual irregularities, but other conditions such as infections and cancers can also cause bleeding as a symptom.

A 19-year-old member asked:

I started spotting and I am between periods. What can this mean?

Dr. Dennis Higginbotham

Probably normal.: Ovulation occurs about two weeks before the menstrual period. At the time of ovulation, the estrogen levels will drop and then continue rising with the cylce. That drop can cause breakthrough bleeding. This is a normal occurence and does not indicate a problem. The fact that a drop in the estrogen level can cause spotting is also the reason women have spotting when they skip a birth control pill.

Need more info: In any case, do pregnancy test first especially if you have unprotected sex. If negative and you continue to have unprotected sex and your periods don't come regularly, you may need to check yourself often to make sure you don't get pregnant. If you want to regulate your periods, start using a reliable method of contraception (condoms, for example) and see you doc about treatment.
