Atorvastatin?: No brand of rosuvastatin is on the Discovery formulary, but atorvastatin and simvastatin are. Try atorvastatin first (any brand) and if you don't like the side effects, try simvastatin.

A 38-year-old member asked:

How quickly can your HDL cholesterol levels change?

Dr. Michael Fenster
Cardiology 31 years experience
Depends: The rate of change in HDL levels can depend upon the specific intervention. For example, discontinuation of smoking and begining an exercise program can take awhile to notice changes. Drugs may act more quickly. If changes are going to occur, they are usually noticeable within 12-16 weeks after initiating therapy.

Does high cholesterol affect pregnancy?

No: Cholesterol and triglycerides normally rises significantly during pregnancy, benefitting mother and fetus. Even mothers with high cholesterol are advised to stop their cholesterol medication during pregnancy. High cholesterol can be a risk only if it has already caused heart disease. In such cases, the severity of the heart disease determines the impact on pregnancy, not the cholesterol itself.

Sad but true: King crab is low in saturated fat but high in cholesterol. The butter doesn't help much but is oh so necessary. As with many things, it's best enjoyed in moderation.

All animal protein has similar amounts of cholesterol per unit weight (red meat, fowl/other white meat, seafood and fish); the difference is the amount of saturated and unsaturated fat in the meat. As noted, ADDING saturated fat, like drawn butter, just makes it worse.

Does eating excess salt result in high cholesterol?

Dr. Timothy King

No: Total cholesterol is made up of "good" cholesterol (hdl), "bad" cholesterol (ldl) and triglycerides. You want high hdl, and low LDL & triglycerides. High cholesterol is caused by genetic factors (your body makes too much cholesterol), dietary intake, and lack of exercise. Exercise has been shown to increase HDL and lower ldl. Salt intake does not impact cholesterol levels.
