how are mental retardation and autism different?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Carlos Satulovsky
27 years experience Psychiatry
IQ measure: Mental retardation only reflects points in a scale of intelligency, determined through standarized tests. Autism, on the other hand, is a set of typical behaviors considered abnormal, in different areas of functioning. Dsm 4 criteria is available online, check it out. Both conditions may coexist.
