A 23-year-old female asked:

I had a kneecap disclocated 8 years ago. i have been trying to start running to lose weight as i'm overweight, but everytime i'm on the treadmill, my knee makes a clicking sound and it gets very painful (inner side). what can i do to ease the pain.

You have: what the Orthopedic experts call PATELLOFEMORAL syndrome. Your KNEE CAP (patella) is not "Tracking" correctly. This can be helped both by physical therapy and arthroscopic surgery. Strongly suggest ORTHOPEDIC consultation! Hope this is helpful Dr Z

Stop running: Exercise is not for weight loss. Weight loss is caloric restriction. Exercise can increase your BMR, but the return on time invested running isn't great. Plus you need to use pain as a guide. If it hurts, don't do it.

See an orthopedic sp: See a specialist for joint disorders. Probably this can be treated to enable you to run, or at least walk.
