Doubtful: sound like either degenerative disc disease with probable osteo arthritis and osteoporosis. You will need a bone scaand bone desitometry. Have your calcium levels CBC and sedimentation rate.

Depends on the prob: Depends on the problem. You generally want to save surgery as the last treatment. Then, if you have a pure disc problem, a disc replacement may be a good alternative to fusion. If you only have a nerve compression problem, a decompressive procedure may be best. Fusion is best for instability and arthritic pain.

Stops motion: The purpose of a lumbar fusion procedure is to stabilize the segment in the lumbar spine. It stops motion in that segment to treat back pain and possibly nerve root compression leading to leg pain, weakness, numbness, or any combination of those. It relies on removing the disc and replacing with bone graft. In addition, screws and rods are used to hold this in place while the fusion occurs.

Collapse means what?: Phrases with common usage that might apply could be "nervous breakdown", "emotional collapse" to name two. Or "falling apart"? All those seem to imply being unable to function in a normal, productive fashion. If that is what is meant, it is important to find out what is behind the depression and what can be done to correct it. Talk to your doctor about it and get the help needed.

Unlikely: The incidence of voice complications from that surgery is very low. Your surgeon can give you his/her statistics and you can decide wether or not to get a second opinion.
