i have a small painful to touch lump on the back of the left side of my head, level with the middle of my ear?

Probably lymph node: Don't mess with it, but apply warm compress for 5 minutes at least once an hour and perhaps it will heal up. If fever or pain, though, or if you are diabetic you should be checked for a dangerous type of ear infection.
