Benzoyl peroxide: Apply it daily and it should get you a good result, though it's not pleasant. Good luck.

Derm & protection: You should see a dermatologist to get on a good skin regimen with topical (and possibly oral) treatments for acne. Dark spots can be from the sun and wearing a high spf sunscreen daily (>30 spf) is a good place to start.

Start with OTC's: First avoid the use of oil based products on face be they make -up, moisturizers or sun screen. Try otc acne medications that contain benzoyl peroxide, if you are not allergic to it as your first treatment option. If not effective visit a dermatologist for more aggressive treatment options.

Pimple prevention: In many cases, you cannot. Most people get acne due to hormones during puberty. In general, cleanse the face with a gentle cleasner, use non-comedogenic (ones that do not clog the pores) products, and try not to let the hair fall down onto the face. If one uses make-up, use ones with few ingredients and is oil-free.

Meds: Many patients do well with over the counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid preparations. Some patients require topical or oral antibiotics or retinoids as well. If the over the counter meds alone don't control your acne after a month of daily use, see a doctor for additional treatment options. It is important to be persistent, and some patients 'get worse before they get better'.
