Go see your doctor: Assuming you are not pregnant, there are 4 ways to tell if you have diabetes. If you have classic symptoms such as increased hunger, increased thirst, increased urination, or blurred vision with random blood glucose =/>200, 2 hour 75 gram glucose tolerance test =/>200, fasting blood glucose =/>126 (x2) or hemoglobin A1c =/>6.5. Please go see your doctor to evaluate you.
Dr. Madhu Kandarpa

Excess thirst: Excessive thirst, frequent urination are usually early symptoms. If in doubt please get checked.
Dr. Melissa Young
Internal Medicine 9 years experience
Blood test : A fasting glucose is a good start a 2 hour glucose tolerance test is recommended if the fasting is normal but you have risk factors for diabetes like obesity or a family history.

Random blood glucose and hemoglobin A1C are additional tools to diagnose diabetes. See link below. http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/35/Supplement_1/S11/T2.expansion.html

HbA1c,NMR,↑AfterFood: Hba1c (reflects average blood sugar of last 1-3 months) best, optimal ≤5.0%; ≥6.5% is clear dm. Even better is NMR particle test insulin-resistance score (can detect ≥10 years prior to hba1c ≥6.5%). At home method, check peak blood glucose, 20-90 min after high carb meal, highest should be ≤140 mg/dl. But this must be done many times, is more complex ; less effective; more hit ; miss.
Dr. Maritza Baez
Family Medicine 17 years experience
Blood test: Some people may not have symptoms. I recommend you get a hba1c blood test to know for sure. Common symptoms can inclde feeling hungry or thirsty all the time, weight loss, numbness and tingling, or nothing at all.
Dr. Pedro Hernandez

A1C>6.5=DM: Most patients with type ii are asymptomatic. Type i diabetics ( children or adolescents)present with abdominal pain and severe vomiting suggestive of ketoacidosis. In the old days the triad of polyuria, polyidipsia, polyphagia ( increase in frequency to urinate, thirst and hunger) were the classical signs. Fasting glucose of 127 or posprandial of 140 or random of 200 is diagnostic. A1c>5.6=igt.

Onset of diabetes: Your doctor can test you. Symptoms you may have include: excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, erectile dysfunction, pain or numbness in feet or hands.

Get a complete exam : Diabetes can be without symptoms for some time until they begin to appear. If you have a family history of diabetes and/or have symptoms of getting up at night multiple times to urinate, leg pains, blurring vision, etc. Or are simply worried about having the disease, a complete exam, explaining to your physician what you are worried about, along with specific lab, can diagnose the disease.
Dr. Robert Uyeda

Really the only: Way to tell for sure is to get blood sugar readings after a glucose challenge (glucose tolerance test), or a 2 hour post prandial blood sugar level also, a blood test for hemoglobin a1c can tell the average blood sugar level for the past few months. No way to tell without blood tests.

Check sugars at home: If fasting for >8 hours fasting sugar 100-125 is pre-diabetes and 2-hrs after eating 140-199 is prediabetes. Fasting -126 and higher and 2 hours after eating- 200 and greater is diabetes can get home blood glucose testing equipment over the counter in pharmacies.
Dr. Carlos Satulovsky
Psychiatry 28 years experience
best way: The best way is to ask your dr for a test measuring your glucose level in blood (blood sugar); and undergo physical exam. Usually symptoms exist by the time of the diagnosis but those can be mild or misinterpreted, so self asessment is not recommended. Polydipsia, polyuria and polyphagia are some of the symptoms that could be present. Best wishes.
Dr. Johnnie Strickland Jr
Family Medicine 33 years experience
Get Tested: If you have excessive thirst, excessive sleepiness especially after eating high carbohyrate meals, excessive urination especially if this is associated with excessive thirt then you may have diabetes; next step is to see your doctor for blood sugar checks to confirm the diagnosis. Other signs include fungal infections adn slow healing of cuts adn scrapes.
Dr. Cayce Jehaimi
Pediatric Endocrinology 21 years experience
A1C: For many years the 2 hour glucose tolerance test has been accepted as the "standard" for diagnosing diabetes in adults, however, and as of late, a more convenient and less cumbersome test (called the glycolayted hemogolobin or in short a1c) has been adopted by various organizations as an acceptable alternative. Checking your fasting glucose in addition to A1c is a good start.

See your doctor: See your doctor and have a good history and physical with labs for best results.

Frequent Urination: There are multiple symptoms associated with diabetes. Most commonly, people will complain of frequent urination, including having to urine multiple time a night. 4 ways to diagnose: Hi. It's pretty easy to test, and there are 4 ways (not all are equal in sensitivity & specificity). 1) fasting glucose 126 or higher, 2) random (non-fasting) 200 or greater, 3) A1c 6.5% or greater, or 75-gram glucose tolerance test with 2-hour glucose 200 or greater. Most people start with a fasting glucose. There is also a gray zone between normal and diabetes now called pre-diabetes.

Wow: Hi. That's a pretty open ended question, and not possible to do justice to in 400 characters! High blood sugar. Type 1 and type 2 with other minor types. Pathophysiology varies between the types of diabetes, but they all have high blood glucose. Complications can include eye, kidney, & nerve damage and atherosclerosis. Treatment options vary in part based on underling pathophysiology.
