Allergist: I recommend that you be evaluated and treated by an allergist. You appear to be experiencing some sort of allergic response to something internal or external. I find these cases to be very elusive in finding the triggers and I feel that an allergist is best qualified to deal with them. In the meantime try an antihistamine like benadryl(causes drowsiness) or claritin(nondrowsy).

A 24-year-old member asked:

I fractured my elbow. I have a cast, but now my hand is swelling. Is my hand fractured too?

Probably not: If there was no injury to the hand and it is not painful then it is probably not fractured. Swelling in the hand after an elbow injury especially in a cast is common. The swelling must be controlled with ice, elevation and most importantly keeping the fingers moving. If it becomes severe it can lead to permanent stiffness of the fingers. A good therapist can help controll the swelling.

Left sided numbness: These are symptoms of great concern. There are several possibilites one of which could be a warning of an impending stroke. You should call your doctor asap to report this and get seen for an examination to determine the cause. Do not delay this. If you suddenly worsen call 911. Muscular likely: You describe a very common and annoying type of low back problem, one that affects millions of people in this country. Female patients, the younger patient should be seen and examined for rheumatologist conditions but on average this is muscular type straining, considering lack o urinary, bowel and midline spine pain. Gentle stretching, cool compresses and tylenol (acetaminophen) and or advil should help resolve.

My wife is eight months pregnant and is having difficulty sleeping. She has cts syptoms in her arm an hand. Never before. Why is this? Any relief?

Usually swelling: In pregnancy, your blood volume doubles. This means there is a ton of extra fluid on board. This fluid sometimes squeezes nerves in the shoulder, elbow and wrist giving the carpal tunnel symptoms. Sometimes braces help. Fortunately, it does go away but not until after delivery. Ask for wrist braces and using a body pillow to support her joints may help. If not ask to talk to a neurologist.

??signs??: Kids capable of waking off an injury will, they are more interested in playing & seldom stop unless something really hurts. If no obvious deformity or discoloration of the skin, you might watch it for a while & place a cool compress to help the pain & reduce the swelling. Do this only if the kid can make a fist & extend it & roll the hand back & forth. If not, get it checked now.
