Yes: There are several sources at the tissue level that can contribute to pain in this case. The disc rupture is one, injury and stretch to ligamentous tissue is another, the loss of height increasing facet joint stress is yet another, as well as muscle strains near the site of injury. In many cases, it is not only what can be seen on the MRI that causes pain, but some things that are not seen.
