Depends on type...: There are different types of beta thalassemia (minor, intermedia, or major for example) that have much different impacts on a patient's health. Treatment can range from nothing (minor) to requiring frequent blood transfusions, iron chelation therapy or even a bone marrow transplant (major). A hematologist can help with the management of all types.

Blood test: You may request a hemoglobin electrophoresis. Thalassemia major is the one with severe anemia and requires frequent transfusion. However, beta thalassemia minor is not dangerous most of the time. Hematologist can give you better insight.
