IBS, a primer: Irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) is a condition associated w/ abdominal discomfort, altered stool pattern, & among others accompanying nausea, bloating, gassiness. Often improved by stooling, ibs is defined by changes in perception of gut distension, motility, sensation. Diet & emotional stress play significant roles here in such patients. Need to rule out first inflammation, ischemia, & infection.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional disorder without a known cause.  Empirically it is known that useful medications modify autonomic neural function.  My clinical research has discovered a group (N=20) of male extreme sport enthusiasts who suffer from IBS.  The unifying clinical finding was that they all had sacroiliac joint (SIJ) injury and hypermobility (subluxation) disorder (diagnosed via criteria published in the Occupational Disabilities Guidelines).  I speculate that SIJ hypermobility stimulates the pelvic presacral plexus & contained parasympathetic nerves that innervate the colon, inducing colon spasm and evacuation.  IBS highly correlates with fibromyalgia, which is likewise common in persons with SIJ subluxation disorder. The reason for a "spectrum of disorder" for fibromyalgia is that the cause, pelvic girdle instability due to pelvic ligament laxity, manifests differently in individuals & genders.  The body musculoskeletal tower is constantly stressed by gravity & a body tilted above an unstable pelvis incurs widely ranging chronic muscle spasm leading to varying densities of painful trigger points. The delicate female pelvis is more easily injured & women have an higher incidence of Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (inherited trait) that contributes to pelvis instability.  Female pelvices are subject to varying intensities of permanent injury related to frequency of childbirth.  In both sexes, severity of fibromyalgia symptoms is a function of musculoskeletal deconditioning & upper body mass borne by an unstable pelvis.  On a Pain Board at Quora.com I discusses these dynamics, which are the true cause of fibromyalgia.  I also discuss my study of male extreme sport enthusiasts who have IBS.

Depends on type : Treatment depends on whether it is constipation or diarrhea predominant type. Other than medications lifestyle modification is also recommended. It is difficult to go through everything so I am attaching a link . Hope you find it useful. I do recommend that you discuss it with your doctor. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/irritable-bowel-syndrome/ds00106.

Symptoms: Ibs is diagnosed when you have certain symptoms and other diseases/conditions are excluded. If you are symptom free i wouldn't worry.

Talk to a physician: Explain to him your story and symptoms and arrive at the conclusion together. Not all abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, etc is ibs. The history is the most important tool we have in helping patients.

How can you tell the difference between IBS and something more serious?

Rome 3 ; testing: Ibs is a diagnosis of exclusion. Rome 3 criteria helps. For example, mucus (a colon lubricant) when present in large volume may signal not only problems with colon spasm (ie. Irritable bowel syndrome), but also partial obstruction, infection, ; even sloughed colon lining. Testing distinguishes ibs from inflammatory bowel diseases (crohn's, ulcerative colitis), infection, ischemic gut. See doctor.
