Asee answer: Root canal is a dental procedure that is performed to remove the soft tissue within the tooth ( nerves and blood vessels). It is usually indicated when tooth decay or infection spreads into the pulp chamber of the tooth.

Root canal treatment: Root canal is a procedure done to clean and remove the infected nerve( called pulp) from the roots of the teeth. It is done when the pulp of the tooth gets infected due to decay or trauma. It requires a series of thin files or cleaning instruments that are used to clean the canals of the roots of the teeth. After cleaning the canals are filled with filling materials.

Root canal: A root canal, or more properly root canal therapy is when a dentist cleans out the nerve and tissue that runs in the canal inside the root of a tooth, and places a sealer so that the tooth will not get infected.

A space: Root canal is the space inside a tooth that houses the pulp (a soft tissue that is consisted of nerve, blood vessel and connective tissue). It actually grows the dentin/root when you are young. However, root canal therapy is the procedure that removes all the diseased or infected pulp so that it doesn't become a breeding ground for bacteria. Otherwise a tooth gets infected from inside out.

Road kill in tooth : Others gave the tech of root canal/endodontic therapy. Here is the "low down:" unlike other body parts, as a general rule, teeth cannot repair themselves. Decay gets worse or a crack deepens until the tooth's nerve and blood vessel (left over from its early formation period)gets infected and won't heal. As such the nerve "stuff" rots out. This "road kill" needs removal w-root canal treatment.

Innermost layer: The root canal is the innermost layer of the tooth. It contains the nerve and blood vessels for the tooth. It is hollow within the dentin layer of the tooth.

Root canal: is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth instead extraction. If a tooth can be saved with a good prognosis, the root canal is the treatment of choice. Root canal treatment is done under profound local anesthetic. It doesn’t hurt more than a filling or any other dental procedure.

Space inside tooth: All teeth are hollow on the inside. They are filled with nerves and blood vessels(pulp) If you get a deep cavity or a crack in your tooth bacteria may infect the pulp tissue causing pain and/or swelling. If you have infected pulp you need a "root canal". The dentist gets you numb and then drills into the tooth to remove the infected pulp. The pain usually goes away in less than one day.

Inside of Tooth: The root canal is a channel within the root of a tooth containing nerve, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It is essential during the development of the tooth to allow for proper root formation. After the root has been fully formed, the root canal system serves as a feedback mechanism to irritants such as bacteria or other microbes.

Can happen: Endodontically (root canal) treated teeth can crack if the forces of our bite is overwhelming to the area. The teeth take a heck of a beating every day, and every night when we sleep and grind our teeth (yes we all do it even if we don't know we do it). So it is not unusual.
