Muscle strain, traum: Most likely you have injured or inflamed the muscles for chewing. Apply moist heat with a wash cloth, take ibuprofen, and avoid opening wide for a few days. If it doesn't improve see your doctor or dentist.

TMJ pain: When you open wide the lateral pterygoid muscle and the retrodiscal tissue help keep the tm disk centered over the mandibular condyle. If the balance between the disk and ligament (tissue behind the disk) are out of sync then your condyle is pressing on muscle or ligament--causing pain. You need to see a dentist to determine exactly what is happening.

Tooth grinding: See your dentist or primary doctor- you may be grinding your teeth at night. The grinding motion may cause jaw muscle soreness, or irritate the jaw joint itself. There are other more rare causes of jaw and facial pain, and your doctor can evaluate you for these conditions.

Need more info: Jaw pain can be from an infected tooth or a tooth under trauma from the bite. If you're jaw hurts in a specific location around the tooth a general practitioner should be able to solve the problem. If the pain is in the corner of the mandible or in the side of the face and head it might be related to malocclusion or bad bite. An orthodontist or a TMJ specialist can help as well as some general.
