why would someone suddenly realize that they don't know where they are or how they got there, generally feeling quite confused?

Need more info: There are several potential explanations, depending on the situation. Some people have sleep disorders that make them sleep walk or act out dreams. Some patients have seizures and can feel confused for sometime after. Some who use alcohol in excess may suffer "blackouts" that they cannot remember. Lastly, mental health disorders could cause this.
