Both are good: choices. Psychiatry is primarily focused on medication for mental health issues these days. Clinical Psychology focused on diagnosis, treatment, and research. You will learn various ways to help others such as cognitive therapy, psychological assessment, mind-body medicine, etc. Interview a few of each profession if you can. Peace and good health. Time frame for training is about the same.

Medical model: Training for psychiatry is decidedly very medical - one would have to obtain a MD degree (during which time you are working in various medical specialties that have nothing to do with psych... including surgery, gynecology, cardiology etc), and then at least 4 years of residency (usually starts out with 6 months of internal medicine and 3 months of neurology).

Psychologists have four years of graduate training in therapy and things related--psychotherapy skills, psychological testing, plus a year and a half (at least) pre-doc practicing these specific skills. After the Ph.D., there's another 1 1/2 yeas (at least) before sitting for the State Boards. We have way more therapy training than other disciplines. No one else has psych. testing training.

Psychologists are also trained in psych. meds, but not enough to prescribe. That is changing, too. In three states psychologists can prescribe (after having an additional one or two years of training/practicum). Five other states are following suit. I wish psychiatrists had better training in therapy skills and psych. testing and psychologists had better training in meds.
