Antibiotics: "Boils" and the closely related folliculitis are most often caused by staph bacteria, and should respond to oral antibiotics such as cephalexin or sulfa. Chronic problems with folliculitis or boils can indicate underlying problems such as nasal colonization or diabetes. If the lesions are not widespread, topical mupirocin or neosporin can be helpful, along with daily cleansing with Hibiclens.
