Ankle Popping: We really don't know why joints pop. Theories include a suction pop, a rough joint, catching lining and, my favorite, GOK-God Only Knows. It is harmless unless painful & swollen. The achilles has a sleeve covering and an old injury could have compromised it and, in your case it causes an irregularity & narrowing of the sheath that pops when the inner tendon rubs through that narrowed spot.
