A 29-year-old male asked:

what's stronger, lithium discilate or zirconia crowns?

Zirconia: Zirconia and lithium disilicate are both newer materials for making crowns, and are starting to replace the traditional porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns. The Zirconia crowns may be stronger, but they may not match your other teeth as well as the lithium disilicate or PFM (esthetic match). Talk to your dentist!

Zirconia: in pure strength zirconia is stronger.....granted you can be more creative with color, shading etc with lithium discilate the zirconia is getting better with shade choices

Zirconia by far: is strongest. Full contour zirconia is the strongest and most break resistant material in dentistry.

How do I clean my crown on my teeth?

Crowning Achievement: Crown care is essentially the same as routine dental care. Use a dental paste for polishing and removing soft plaque along with a regular flossing. A device such as a waterpik® will provide pressurized water to flow above/below the crown/gingival interface to remove food particles and prevent odor. An oral rinse will finish the job. Remember to avoid staining foods and juices.

Crohn's Disease: Crohn's disease affects the digestive system. It can have the following symptoms stomach pain, diarrhea, blood in your bowel movements, weight loss, underweight, slowed growth(kids) or fever. Eye, skin and joint problems can sometimes be found. These symptoms can overlap with other problems as well. So, this is usually diagnosed by a GI specialist.

Is there an association between lithium and food cravings?

Yes: And for some reason, patients seem to crave carbohydrates or sweet foods. It is a major problem and challenge when treating a patient with lithium. Lithium, which is an element, can be a very good medication in many instances, however, it does have it's drawbacks. With any and all medications, one must do a careful benefit/risk analysis.
A 31-year-old member asked:

Is withdrawal from lithium related to the drug itself or lack of serotonin?

Dr. Mark Reynolds
Psychiatry 33 years experience
Deep question!: I would suspect like many things in psychiatry there is no absolute answer to your question. The evidence for withdrawal after discontinuation of lithium is unclear. It is generally thought manic and depressive recurrences after lithium discontinuation suggest rebound, but actual studies are absent to my knowledge. The answer for you may reside in what you have experienced personally.
