Rib pain and muscle: From your description, this may represent a radiculopathy or nerve root irritation. It could represent an early case of shingles. I suggest that you see a local physician to have these symptoms checked out.

Poss Pleural Catch?: There is a condition where Pleura (lining of lungs&full of pain fibers), gets stuck between ribs on exhalation. This is painful & Massage does not help. One needs to lean to the opposite side standing(hold on!) & take deep breaths. This often will pull the pleura out and immed relieve pain. If this works, great. If not U need to see primary & poss get xray to make sure the rib structure is NL.
