Depends on degree: The diet depends on degree of malnutrition. A high-calorie diet where the fat energy comes from unsaturated fats is a good place to start. More starch is also important as a source of calories and energy. I would recommend consultation with a registered dietitian to ensure adequate balance of calories and nutrients.

Why: The biggest question is why he is malnourished is there any problem with his gut or digestive system . If not and the only problem he does not have the appetite then you can take a can of supplement high protein diet and mix it up with two scoop of his favorite ice cream and add to it some peanut butter and honey . It is very delicious and no child will resist the smoothie like drink
