Reactive lymph node: It is not uncommon to have enlargement of one or several lymph nodes around the head and neck area when suffering from an infection such as a cold. The inflamed lymph nodes may increase and fluctuate in size over a few days and be quite painful. They typically become less painful and smaller 1-2 weeks after the infection. Large (> 2 cm) or persistently growing nodes should be evaluated.
