You can't: Keep them moist with a lip balm/lubricant that is only for your personal use. If using your fingers to apply be sure to wash thoroughly and avoid finger/eye contact.

Antibiotic ointment: When cold sores are scabbed over, the cold sore - herpes - flare up is over. It is still contagious and so you need to be careful. To avoid bacterial infection of the wound and to keep the tissue moist you may apply antibiotic ointment.
