Recurrent problem?: Sudden congestion is usually caused by viral infection or irritant exposure. If recurring, if you've had sinus infections, or if you have other typical symptoms (can include nasal drip, sneezing, itchy eyes/ears/throat, ear fullness, headache) then consider an evaluation for different (allergic and non-allergic) types of chronic rhinitis
