Chronic Viral infect: This is a very good question and it may not be easily answered. The research on this is still showing mixed results. The more likely scenario that we are seeing some interest is another common viral illness known as cmv. Chronic viral inflammation with CMV may be a common reason for disease. There is no definitive information yet, but we could see more as the study of viruses progresses.

Interesting: Usually for reasons we don't understand the varicella-zoster virus that causes chicken pox decides to reactivate later on and cause shingles. This usually happens after age 50, likely due to a weakened immune system as we age. Some other possible triggers are trauma, physical or emotional stress.

No: Our ability to prevent viruses if limited, although vaccine is the best method we have. The cdc reports a vaccine is being worked on. In the meantime they have a website that discusses how to prevent mosquito bites. For how it is the only effective prevention. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/qa/prevention.htm.

Not long: As you recover from influenza the body is building antibodies which attack and kill the virus.
