At least 8 hrs sleep: Timing becomes important to remain in line with the rest of the world. So you can make to and keep your appointments and meet deadlines. Sleeping at a stretch for 8 to 9 hrs at your age is more important. So keep a strict sleep/wake schedule and stick to it.

That depends on the: Person's age. Babies need a great deal of sleep. Children need less then babies. Adults require less then children. It is recommended that adults aim for 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep per night. However, some individuals can tolerate considerably less sleep and still function well.

Why???: Need more info. Are you only sleeping 3 hours because you can't sleep more? Are you napping? How old are you? Lots of stress? Change in routine? Change in meds? Exercising late at night? Drinking more alcohol? Do you read or study or watch tv in bed?

Many causes: Many things can cause this - sleep apnea can make your sleep not productive, depression and other mood disorders can interrupt your sleep patterns. You really need to talk with your doctor, have an evaluation and posibly further tests.
