Forever: Once hooked on nicotine, like alcohol, always hooked. The physical withdrawal period is surprisingly brief, say, a week or so.But the psychological withdrawal (meaning desire to smoke,or missing it a lot)can last a long long time and requires mental discipline from now on.A percentage are free completely, but don't count on it.It's Like an ex- you had a stormy end with but still feel ambivalent about

Great job: Stay focused and determined. If you were smoking for a short time and infrequently then the craving will go away soon. However if you were smoking regularly 1/2 to 1 PPD then if the craving may last a little longer. 2 weeks are the worse. Try sugarless Gum, Celery/cucumber to keep mouth busy, hang on to pen or pencil to keep hand occupied. You are half way there. Stay strong

Depends: It depends on how long and how much you smoked. Some people take as long as a month and unfortunately, some do not make it at all unless they have help.

Highly variable: In most people the severe cravings, irritability, trouble sleeping, anxiety and muscle tics can go on for a couple-three weeks and then gradually improves. Some have it shorter, others longer, depending on the degree of both physical and psychological dependency. There are many products to reduce the symptoms (nicotine patches, gum etc./lobeline/chantix) but it will go away. Good luck/stay quit!!

After 20 yrs of smoking I am trying to quit. I am on day 4 without a cigarette. How long does it take for all the nicotine to be gone?

It's hard to be sure: Nicotine has relatively short half-life (30-min-120min) because it is broken-down by liver via oxidation process and thus disappears rather quickly--hence people feel need to smoke often. Chronic smokers will have nicotine in body for longer, but i would guess after 1 wk, there isn't much left to bother you. Traces of that can still be detected up to 2 months later. Congrats on quiting. Good luck.

I never smoke, bike 10 mi/day & drink only h2o. However, tried a < 1 cheap cigar over 2 weeks ago, didn't inhale. Will this show up in nicotine testing?

Nicotine: I don't think there is an answer for this. The "i did not inhale" does not usually mean there was no nicotine exposure. So, I am not sure what the test will detect, but i would be prepared for it to be positive.

Cessation program: Smoking cessation programs give you both professional and peer support to remain motivated to quit. If you are experiencing difficult withdrawal symptoms (craving, anxiety, insomnia, irritability) that are threatening your abstinence, consider use of nicotine replacement therapy as well to reduce these symptoms. Some people find acupuncture and hypnosis useful, but a support program would be 1st.

I agree with Dr. Wartenberg's answer. Consider calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW or go to smokefree.gov for more information and encouragement.

Firstly, they don't: just last a few days, and can last weeks and even months. The worst of them last 3-5 days, which is true of virtually any short-acting drug, including alcohol and heroin, which also have the worst of withdrawal lasting 3-5 days in most cases, but with a PAWS (post-acute withdrawal syndrome) which can last weeks or months. Some issues, like impaired concentration, can last for years.

Cigar: Yes. Cigar wrap contains nicotine. Stop as soon as you can. Now is best.
