How is schizophrenia diagnosed? How can I tell if someone has schizophrenia?

Dr. Alfredo Soto

Clinical exam: Schizophrenia is diagnosed by a medical expert, like a psychiatrist, who interviews the individual to identify specific thinking patterns and symptoms. It is not diagnosed until symptoms have been present for many months, because symptoms of psychosis can improve on their own. The primary symptoms to look for are evidence of bizarre delusions or hallucinations.

Does smoking weed cause schizophrenia?

Dr. Donald Hazlett
Psychiatry 54 years experience
No: However it could unmask a latent schizophrenic process. "weed" at times causes euphoria and some feelings of paranoia. Hallucinations are not unusual either. Both are components of schizophrenia. In the 70's IV sedative hypnotics were used if one suspected schizophrenia but it wasn't clear. It would at times unmask schizophrenia symptoms of paranoia & hallucinations. Ethically it isn't done now.

A 45-year-old member asked:

How is schizophrenia inherited?

2 doctor answers10 doctors weighed in
Dr. Alfredo Soto
Psychiatry 26 years experience
Not sure: While there is a lot of evidence that schizophrenia runs in families, the specific genes have been hard to figure out. It seems that the genetics are complicated because there is also a strong effect from environmental stressors like exposures by fetuses to certain viruses. There is also a newer idea called epigenetics in which the environment affects these genes that are related to schizophrenia.
