Without buying: liposuction, safe weight loss is 1-2 lbs per week. Other than that, you may be losing water weight. There are various questionnaires that help determine your risk of depression or bipolar disease, that can be administered by a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist.

Evaluation: To get an accurate diagnosis you need to see your doctor. They may order blood tests to rule out any underlying medical illnesses that could be causing your symptoms (i.e. Thyroid disease). Once all medical reasons are ruled out, then a mental health evaluation of your symptoms can help clarify a diagnosis for accurate treatment.

Emotional Cycling: The cycling of emotions is seen in everyone; even those not diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder. Eventually, a depressed or manic patient will return to "baseline." one can manage their symptoms (therapy, medications, behavior), but the ups and downs will remain - just with varied intensities. I hope that helps!

It's possible: If "really happy" means staying up for a few nights, spending lots of money, engaging in high risk behaviors, having racing thoughts, and grandiose plans, then, yes. If really happy means relieved that the depression has decreased and now the person can experience some joy in life then maybe not. The details matter here. I would see a psychologist or psychiatrist to explore the answer.

How do doctors tell if it's depression, or bipolar disorder that you're feeling?

It can be kind of: Tricky. If the person has not yet experienced an episode of mania or hypomania, then it would not be possible diagnosis them with a bipolar depression at that time. It would usually be assumed that it was unipolar depression. However once either mania or hypomania has occurred than the diagnosis of bipolar disorder can be made.
