A 29-year-old female asked:

if babies kick hard enough in utero can they break the waters by accident?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. James Ferguson

Define "break": If you mean does it trigger labor and delivery by breaking the bag, that would be no. However, babies occasionally scratch the linings with fingers or toes and this can result in a common birth defect. The wound can create a strand that can wind around fingers or toes leading to loss of digits. Its called the amniotic band disruption, rare but it does happen.

When is it ok to give my baby juice?

Dr. Marcus Degraw
Pediatrics 22 years experience
Six months: Six months is when juice and water are generally started for infants. However, juice (which is mostly sugar and water) is not a necessary part of infant nutrition and most pediatricians (and dentists) would be quite fine with never giving it to infants.
A member asked:

Can the flu shot give my baby the flu?

12 doctor answers31 doctors weighed in
Dr. Michael Pappas
Pediatrics 23 years experience
No: The flu shot is dead. It cannot give your baby the flu. While as in any vaccinations, there are some minor side effects, e.g. Fever, the benefit of the shot far outweighs contracting the flu itself from an infected person. If your little one is over 6 months, then he/she should get it.

No: Not unless he/she has had evidence of an irritant rash or contact dermatitis after using a sunscreen containging these. Preservative sensitivity is not common. How do doctors determine antibiotic dosages for babies?

4 doctor answers10 doctors weighed in
Dr. Anatoly Belilovsky
Pediatrics 35 years experience
Per kilo body weight: Most antibiotics have dosages by milligrams per kilo body weight per day; amoxicillin, for example, is 40-100 mg/kg/day, so an 11-pound (5-kilo) baby would get up to 500 mg per day, usually in 2 doses, so that's 250 mg twice a day, maximum.

Concern not confirm: The american academy of pediatrics has developed testing to screen children within the first two years of life at risk for autism spectrum disorder. Questionnaire forms are used as well as performance tests. Concern may indicate referral for behavior therapy. It may take a few years before definite diagnosis is possible.
